Tips for Creating Learning Retention

During the COVID-19 pandemic, we are presented with various kinds of webinars, online workshops, training, video courses, both paid and free. Most of us must have followed a lot of these online lessons until today. The question is: Do you still remember what you learn?

To be able to both survive and compete in the era of digital acceleration, companies, organizations, and even individuals must have the desire and ability to become great talents.

The question is, how often do we use and utilize technology to help us develop our competencies?

A process of how we receive information that does not only enter our short-term memory but enters our long-term memory is called “Learning Retention.” Yes, “Learning Retention” is very important but forgotten. This is important to be considered by all teachers or trainers or whoever runs the class as well as subject or learning program.

Here are six tips for creating Learning Retention, so that the information we convey can be embedded in long-term memory.

1. Creating Experience by practicing what has been taught.
Experience through practice must be included in your subject. Learning the theory is important, but practice will keep the theory in the long-term memory.

2. Doing Repetition.
Repetition will make us remember more information. From the teacher’s point of view, repetition will allow us to continue to push the information that we convey to the learner. And from the learner’s perspective, repetition will make it easier to understand the information.

3. Teaching others.
This action will help you to remember and recall from your memory then using your own language to understand it.

4. Learn from Mistakes.
Nobody is perfect and the mistakes that we make in practice will be easier for us to remember and learn. If we learn from our mistakes, we are likely to be able to minimize other mistakes that may occur in the future.

5. Utilizing Audiovisual.
As we know, there are several types of learners based on the form of learning subjects, two of which are listening and seeing visualization. The subject in the form of audiovisual will help your learners to remember it more easily.

6. Use Short Sentences.
The use of short and repeated sentences so that the essence of the subject will be easy to remember.

The responsibility for paying attention to Learning Retention lies mostly with the information provider or teacher. Because teachers, trainers, and learning organizers need to ensure that the information conveyed goes into the long-term memory of the audience.
